College Goal Alaska

February is FAFSA Frenzy month for the University of Alaska and many activities are planned to encourage students to compete their FAFSA application. College Goal Alaska is an event held every year at Northwest Campus and in various communities across the region. Officially held from January 15th to March 30th, Northwest Campus holds its College Goal in early February. This event is a collaboration of many state and regional organizations all focused on ensuring students apply for all possible funding sources available.

I'm Going to College

The I'm Going To College program creates awareness of higher education and instills the idea that going to college is an attainable goal. Every year 5th graders from Nome Elementary School participate in a variety of exercises and activities at Northwest Campus. In preparation, students learn about different types of colleges, and how to apply for admission and financial aid.

On visitation day, the children travel to the college, where Northwest Campus creates an age-appropriate experience similar to a first day at college. This field trip includes a motivational opening session, hands-on classes, and lunch.

This event is made possible through collaboration among several agencies. Thank you to Nome Elementary School, the numerous volunteers involved in the event and the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education. We appreciate your involvement in encouraging our young people to believe "I'm Going To College"!

I Know I Can

Geared to 2nd grade students, I Know I Can exposes students to different employment opportunities and spurs them to create goals for their future. Through the "I Know I Can" story book, students learn that it's important to stay in school and work hard now to succeed in the future.

Community volunteers, university staff and school staff visit the classrooms and share personal stories and encouragement about working hard and staying in school. This annual event is available to 2nd grade students throughout our region.
